How are veterinary fees derived?

The Ontario Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA) and the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) publish an annual Fee Guide that provides a guideline of fees that are considered fair and reasonable. Similar to the majority of practices, our pricing structures are based upon these guidelines.

Fees in the 2023 Fee Guide are formulated from the Ontario Survey of Hospital Owners; the Procedure Frequency Study from Ontario Economic Surveys; the Time Study undertaken in Ontario Economic Surveys; the state of the economy in 2022 and forecasts for 2023.

Fees are derived using: costs of overhead, non-veterinary staff salaries and benefits, rent, utilities, supplies, etc. (adjusted for inflation); time to perform the procedure as established in the economic survey; relative value of the procedure, relating to complexity, skill, responsibility and risk involved (established from the economic survey); and value of the veterinarian’s time, measured by comparing salaries of individuals working in comparable professions.
